Bone Look Back in Anger: Dog-loving Liam Gallagher helps UK’s Dogs

Oasis lead-singer Liam Gallagher signed a classic Epiphone Casino guitar with All Saints wife Nicole Appleton, their Dachshund ‘Ruby Tuesday’ and TV vet Marc Abraham in the Gibson Guitar Showroom in Central London to launch PUP AID 2010 – the UK’s first charity boutique music festival and fun celebrity-judged dog show.

PUP AID 2010 – taking place in Brighton on Sept 19th – aims to raise awareness about the cruel industry of puppy farming – basically the battery farming of dogs in the UK purely for profit.

ThePet.net co-founder Marc, who’s also the resident vet on ITV’s This Morning and Sky1′s My Pet Shame, commented: “As a massive Oasis fan I’m honoured Liam and Nicole are involved and helping me to promote dog welfare as well as raising much-needed funds for both rescue and the research into the health and happiness of all dogs.”

Marc advises that: “People looking for a dog should always approach the Kennel Club for their list of Accredited Breeders or consider adopting from a rescue shelter instead.

“Never buy pups online, from pet shops or free newspaper ads, as these are usually farmed pups which – if they survive the first few days – will often develop severe behavioural and/or medical problems that can often be both impossible and expensive to fix – leading to pain and suffering as well as family heartbreak.

“Always insist on seeing the pup interacting with it’s mother and beware of scams. Please remember that you may think you’re ‘rescuing’ the pup – but its mother’s still suffering and now must produce another pup you’ve just made room for.”

This uniquely signed Epiphone Casino guitar will now do a tour of the festivals to gain even more legendary dog-loving signatures and will finally be auctioned at the PUP AID 2010 event with monies raised going to Dogs Trust, Kennel Club Charitable Trust, and Oldies Club – a small charity dedicated to the re-homing of older unwanted dogs.

ThePet.net Vet & Gavin & Stacey’s Joanna Page to front ‘My Pet Shame’ on Sky1

My Pet Shame is a new factual entertainment series on Sky1 starting next Wednesday 14 July.

The show, fronted by Joanna Page (Gavin & Stacey, Love Actually) and ThePet.net TV Vet Marc Abraham (This Morning), will look at pets and the excruciatingly embarrassing ailments they often suffer.

My Pet Shame is a light, informative show, where Joanna Page will be on hand to look at people’s pets and the embarrassing problems they can suffer from, including stinking emissions, rude outbursts and seriously antisocial behaviour. Vet Marc Abraham, will aim to diagnose and treat each strange, often shameful illness and in turn provide the animals and their owners with a healthier, happier lifestyle.

Page commented: “After hearing about the new Sky 1 series My Pet Shame my heart melted at the animal stories I heard.  As an animal lover and dog owner myself I decided I really wanted to be a part of the show.  The cases we visit are truly some of the strangest you could imagine, and I must say, at times very funny too.  I hope people enjoy meeting these intriguing animals as much as I have.”

The first episode’s cases include Lulu the barren Bullmastiff, Moog the farting cat, Millie the chewaholic rabbit and Dillon the nervous Dalmation. Packed with useful training advice and surprising facts, My Pet Shame will help even the seemingly most hopeless of cases, proving that when it comes to your pet, it’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks.

ThePet.net on primetime TV

UPDATE: Pets Undercover is now showing on ITV1, Monday 16th March, 8pm.

ThePet.net and ‘Pets Undercover’ on the Tonight Programme, ITV1 – Monday 9th March, 8pm.

ThePet.net’s co-founder, vet Marc Abraham helps Tonight presenter Jonathan Maitland and his dog Monty investigate whether some vets are overcharging and recommending unnecessary procedures to pet owners, and if vet bills really need to be so high.

Nearly half of all British households have a pet – with the favourite being the loveable pooch.

But if you’re like Tonight presenter Jonathan Maitland, whose dog Monty costs £2000 a year to keep, it may feel like the bills are excessive.

In these tough financial times, animal refuge homes are reporting that pets are being abandoned in record numbers. In the last five years, more than one and half million pets have been put down – because their owners can’t afford them.

One of the biggest costs are vet bills, and in a specially commissioned Tonight survey carried out by K9 Media – 76 per cent of dog owners said the cost of keeping their pet healthy has become too expensive.

In this programme, the Tonight team takes Monty the dog, Rupert the rabbit and Mickey the cat on mystery shopping visits to find out the truth about vet bills.

Tonight exposes how the cost of medical procedures and medications can vary considerably from practice to practice and discovers that some vets are prepared to recommend expensive treatment that is completely unnecessary.

The programme meets one devoted pet owner that has paid £15,000 for treatments for her dog (only £4,000 of which was covered by pet insurance) and reveals how she is paying a 250 per cent mark-up on medication sold to her by her vet.

Marc Abraham passionately believes in putting pet before profit. It was this that led him to set up ThePet.net, a free website which allows pet owners to rate and review pet-friendly businesses – including vets – to help others find the best for their pet.

Marc Abraham said:

‘As co-founder of ThePet.net, working on such a worthwhile project was a dream come true. In my experience, clients generally don’t mind how much they pay for their poorly pets as long as they get good value for money and their pet only receives necessary treatments.

‘I want to make sure the public knows there are many, many fantastic vets out there who will always put your pet first and deliver great customer service every time.

‘Exploitation of pet owners can only result in higher fees and negative client–vet interactions. This will ultimately lead to reduced trips to the vet, an increase in abandonment and falling ownership rates. The long-term knock on effects for the UK pet industry could be disastrous.

‘By making pet-owners aware that there is a range of services out there, we are one step closer to ensuring Britain continues to responsibly own their pets well into the future.’
