Please help Rudozem Street Dogs build their New Shelter

Good friends of ThePet.net Rudozem Street Dog Rescue (RSDR) have set up as a charitable group to help them achieve registered charity status in the UK.

And their fundraising idea for this year is a good one, as they are planning a ‘Great Swim’  – a one mile swim in open water in the Strathclyde Loch – and all to build a new shelter for 40 stray dogs.

Puppy Farm Awareness Day – Report & Photos

PuppyPartyGroup

We had such a great day on Saturday 19th Sept at the World’s Biggest Puppy Party to raise awareness on Puppy Farm awareness Day so we would really like to say thanks to everyone who came and made it such a huge success on so many levels.

We definitely raised awareness like never before, but also set the bar pretty high for a repeat day next year too. Thanks to all who came, supported, sponsored, donated prizes and time – on behalf of our team and the dogs of the UK, I can’t thank each and everyone of you enough for all you did and continue to do.

What turned out to be such an important ground-breaking day took a real effort to organise and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of all the anti-puppy farming exhibitors, the celebrities/personalities, but most of all the guests who came from far and wide with their dogs to help raise awareness about puppy farming.

So special thanks to Puppy Farm Awareness Day show sponsors Eukanuba; and also to Reg & Ruby, Pet-ID, Sara Abbott, K9 Kitchen, Barkley’s Dog Emporium, The Dogs Products, Petographer, Spiffy Dog, Funky Mutts, PriceRightHome.com, Paw Plunger, Suzart, Absolutely Animals, White’s Dog Food, Byofresh, Treatment Rooms, Company of Animals, John Paul Pet, Lily’s Kitchen.

Also we’d like to thank the Kennel Club for all their support and letting us tap into their vast experience of dog-show planning, Master of Ceremonies Mr Danny Pike (BBC Radio Sussex), as well as all the charities that supported included Sussex Pet Rescue, Pro Dogs Direct, Dog’s Trust (Shoreham), PAT Dogs, and Vets Get Scanning.

The crowd was also treated to excellent and informative displays by both Canine Partners and Sussex Police Dogs as well.

So in order to keep raising awareness, please check out the professional photos of the event taken by Tabatha Fireman (please credit) which are all COMPLETELY FREE to download:

Thou shall have a fishy…

Fish tanks can often look a little bit dull, but the new biOrb Life tanks from Reef One are far from plain. They look hypnotic when they are lit up at night, and are a fantastic way to show off your pet fish in a tank that is easy on the eyes.

The nice folk over at Reef One have 3 fish tanks to give away to 3 lucky users of ThePet.net, you can enter the competition here, and find out more information about the biOrb Life fish tanks here. Good luck!

ThePet.net and Poopod celebrate a decade of poop

We’re joining up this month with award-winning clever all-in-one dog-walking device Poopod to remind all responsible dog owners how important it is to clean up after their dogs.

Dog faeces is potentially a huge danger to humans. Primary school children and footballers are most at risk from diseases passed on from undisposed of infected dog waste. Unless it’s is picked up and disposed of immediately worms can develop and lead to a number of serious diseases like toxocariasis which can develop into pneumonia, asthma and even blindness.

So to celebrate Dogs Trust’s tenth annual National Poop Scoop Week from 22nd – 28th June 2009, ThePet.net and Poopod will at Paws in the Park Dog Show in Hampshire giving out free poo-bags, chatting with responsible dog-owners about the importance of picking up their dogs’ poop and giving them the chance to win their very own Poopod!

TV Vet and co-creator of ThePet.net Marc Abraham says “It’s lovely to be able to connect with responsible dog owners both face-to-face at dog shows like Paws in the Park as well as online at ThePet.net, educating and encouraging them to keep Britain tidy and healthy, not just for our dogs but for us humans too. By teaming up with Poopod we can make cleaning up after dogs even easier and as a direct result create a safer environment for all of us to enjoy”.

ThePet.net and Poopod will be attending both days of Paws in the Park Dog Show on 20th and 21st June 2009 at Broadlands Park, Romsey, Hampshire SO51 9ZD. For more information about Paws in the Park visit www.pawsinthepark.net

Fat Fluffs… bunny mad madness

fat fluffs

ThePet.net continues to celebrate our ‘Year of the Rescue Pet’ as we’re sharing our stand this weekend with Fat Fluffs rabbit rescue at the Ultimate Pet Show taking place at Birmingham’s NEC.

Based in nearby Solihull Fat Fluffs takes in all sorts of abandoned homeless rabbits and tries to find them permanent and loving homes forever. For those rabbits with more challenging personalities or continuing health problems Fat Fluffs provides a sanctuary and these rabbits stay as part of the family.

rabbits
Fat Fluffs have been awarded charity status with an amazing bunny-mad core team and large devoted group of fosterers. There are currently more than 33,000 unwanted rabbits in rescues across the UK and every rescue seems to have a never-ending waiting list of bunnies to come in for rehoming.

Fat Fluffs takes in all the rabbits they possibly can as far as space allows, with the aim of ensuring they are physically and emotionally well, neutered, wormed, vaccinated and rehomed to loving forever homes.

They have even had a few bunnies come in that would rather eat you than their dinner and although some of these anti-social buns have been rehabilitated and found new homes those more scared stay and are considered a permanent part of the Fat Fluffs family.

For more information come and visit ThePet.net Stand featuring Fat Fluffs at the Ultimate Pet Show, this weekend 2-4th May or visit www.fatfluffs.com

How to keep a happy, healthy goldfish

It’s hard to believe it’s Bank Holiday season already; and as expected travelling fairgrounds once more make their colourful cross-country pilgrimage, pitching-up on waste grounds and parks all over the UK.

But remember when it was commonplace to win a lonely goldfish in a bag waiting for its new home?

fish

Sure some fish would have been cherished by their new owner and lived for 20 years or more, but the majority would’ve most likely perished before they even made it to their tiny underwater castle in their new round bowl on the mantlepiece.

Luckily the concept of winning an animal as a prize is now, thank Cod, not thought to be consistent with a responsible approach to becoming an owner – one that’s clearly good at darts or hoop-la or just plain luck.

But if you have just recently, or are considering purchasing a new shiny little friend from a proper pet-shop or aquatic store, then please respect him or her by buying a proper basic aquarium complete with filter in which to live in.

When introducing your fish to the tank, please follow these simple instructions:

Firstly, when you fill your tank with water (tap water is perfectly alright – and ideally should be left to stand for a couple of days); put your fish, still in its closed bag into your aquarium for around thirty minutes. When both temperatures are the same you are now readyto free your new little golden buddy and allow it to stretch its fins.

Secondly, find an attractive poster of the sea or any other water subject and attach it to the outside back of the aquarium allowing the whole scene to come to life even more. Addition of greenery is also a great idea but beware, goldfish are nibblers, so choose ferns, grass-like plants (the wider the leaves the better) or even fake ones?

Goldfish rarely need heaters but will always require a light source – especially with live vegetation.

Feeding your new fish is easy – and we don’t mean to the cat! Once daily is fine, and always use a well-balanced food with all the necessary vitamins and minerals. Please ask your local pet-shop which brand is best, and most importantly please be careful especially when measuring out the amount you feed; over-feeding is one of the main causes of early death.

Always maintain your filter and clean your tank with regular water-cycling. Goldfish are susceptible to a number of common diseases and are notoriously hard to treat, the final ‘flush’ being the preferred treatment historically used by most fish-owners.

The “common” goldfish is however pretty hardy and they also enjoy company – so if you have the space why not even add some more colourful friends into your tank?

Always respect your goldfish and be glad that the age of winning that ol’ fashioned, out-dated über-cliché – the ‘goldfish in a bag’ – has finally had its chips.
